We tried to soften the seam between the amber and the charcoal six times. Each time it became less of a painting. The decision to leave it rough is what made the work finish itself.
Amber across the lower band, charcoal above, with the seam left rough where the knife refused to blend the two — the way an actual horizon refuses to be exactly a line. Mixed media: oil, ink, and a single pass of cold wax to lower the gloss.
Six weeks. Forty-eight hours of cure between knife sessions. The amber is built from three pigments — yellow ochre, raw sienna, and a touch of burnt umber — and reads warmer in low light, cooler at noon.
Largest work in the current cohort. Made for a long wall — above a dining table, a sectional sofa, or anchoring a room where the rest of the furniture is quiet.
