The work

The light at the end of the day, held.

Amber across the lower band, charcoal above, with the seam left rough where the knife refused to blend the two — the way an actual horizon refuses to be exactly a line. Mixed media: oil, ink, and a single pass of cold wax to lower the gloss.

Six weeks. Forty-eight hours of cure between knife sessions. The amber is built from three pigments — yellow ochre, raw sienna, and a touch of burnt umber — and reads warmer in low light, cooler at noon.

Largest work in the current cohort. Made for a long wall — above a dining table, a sectional sofa, or anchoring a room where the rest of the furniture is quiet.

Studio note

On the seam.

We tried to soften the seam between the amber and the charcoal six times. Each time it became less of a painting. The decision to leave it rough is what made the work finish itself.

The oxidised copper will continue to deepen for the first 18 months under indirect light, then stabilise. The white and taupe are archival pigments and will not shift. Hang out of direct sunlight and away from radiators; avoid humidity above 65%.
